Research Assistant – Entomology (Guinea Bissau and UK)

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Research Assistant with interests in vector biology and control to work on a cluster randomized trial to investigate a novel community mass drug administration (MDA) strategy for malaria control on the Bijagos Archipelago of Guinea Bissau. The trial will run from 1st September 2019 for 3 years and will be conducted with our partners in the Bissau Guinean Ministry of Public Health, The Bandim Health Project and MRC The Gambia Unit at LSHTM (MRCG).

The post-holder will be based predominantly in the field in Guinea Bissau with time spent at MRCG and LSHTM and would be part of a multi-disciplinary research team based in the Department of Disease Control (DC) – being a member of the Logan Group and Centre for excellence for entomological research (ARCTEC). The post-holder will also work with colleagues in the wider Faculty of Infectious & Tropical Diseases.  Dr Anna Last as Principal Investigator will be the line manager in the Department of Clinical Research (CRD) and the post-holder will also collaborate with colleagues in the Department of Infection Biology (DIB).

The main responsibility of the post is to set up and manage insectaries. The post- holder will have a MSc degree in a medical entomology or related discipline is essential – either awarded or imminent; will be a highly motivated research scientist keen to develop skills and experience and further their career by undertaking a part-time PhD in entomology; relevant experience of undertaking laboratory work, requiring accuracy and excellent attention to detail, adhering to health and safety guidelines; evidence of excellent organisational and scientific skills, including effective time management; proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a research team to meet deadlines. This full-time post funded by the Joint Global Health Trials Scheme (MRC/Wellcome/UKAid/NIHR) is available from 1 September 2019 until 31 May 2022. The salary will be on the Academic Pathway Grade 5 scale at point 27, £34,238 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
