The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF’s work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme; and
  2. Excellent oral and written skills in Portuguese is required, knowledge of English or French is an asset
  3. Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required; knowledge of data management systems is an asset.
  4. Good knowledge of Child Protection issues is a definitive advantage.
  5. Knowledge /experience of referral and case management tool on violence against children and child protection data collection and reporting is an asset.
  6. Communication skills (verbal and written)
  7. Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records

Purpose of the internship:

UNICEF Child Protection interventions include protecting children, especially the most vulnerable, from all forms of violence, exploitation, abuse and harmful practices, all of which contributes to the achievement of targets in Sustainable Development Goals 5, 8 and 16. Specific areas of work include Social Services Workforce Strengthening, Justice systems strengthening, Children on the Move, Violence Against Children, Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. Child Protection response includes also prevention or response services

for children affected by humanitarian crises and armed conflict, including in areas such as Mental Health and Psychosocial support, among others.

In Guinea-Bissau, UNICEF is supporting the Government, in collaboration with its partners, to strengthen the Child Protection system and promote social change to prevent and respond to violence against children in the country. At the downstream level, positive social norms and behavior change are being promoted, with interventions conducted at the community level to address Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. UNICEF is also working on the Civil registration system strengthening to improve the access of children to quality birth registration routine services.

The Volunteer will be working at the Child Protection Programme, under the supervision of UNICEF Child Protection Manager, who is under the Deputy-Representative.


  1. Provide support to the Child Protection group in streamline their coordination activities and improve information exchange: compile key child protection documents, group email, organization of working meetings, among others;
  2. Support Child Protection partners in implementing improved data management, including tools and reporting system: follow-up and compilation of birth registration, violence against children and FGM data;
  3. Provide contributions to the elaboration of the Child Protection Legal Code, trough the close follow up and participation on the ongoing work (attend meetings and prepare minutes, support the organization of working sessions and relevant ongoing activities).
  4. Prepare weekly brief information on key child protection activities/events;
  5. Support in the preparation and realization of Child Protection key events, in collaboration with the communication section;
  6. Participate in working meetings with partners (including in the country regions);
  7. Perform any other duties as required.

Start date (indicative): 1st September 2019

Duration: The duration of the internship is four months with possible extension up to a maximum of 6 months. The candidates should indicate their availability in the cover letter.


  1. Enrolled in a first-level or advanced level university degree in law, international development, human rights, social service, or another relevant social science field.
  2. knowledge of child protection issues.
  3. Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research skills on child protection is an asset.
  4. Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required.
  5. Excellent writing and speaking Portuguese is required and English is an important asset.
