Background

The United Nations in Guinea-Bissau supports the country to achieve its national priorities focused on sustainable development, peace and security and human rights. The Resident Coordinator leads the UN Country Team (UNCT) and ensures the support of the UN is fully aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The current UN development assistance framework as agreed with the Government consists of six key priorities:

Democratic Governance, Rule of Law and Human Rights;
Sustainable and Equitable Economic Development;
Social Development (health, education, and social protection);
Nutrition and Food Security;
Inclusion and Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups;
Resilience and Environmental Sustainability.

The Resident Coordinator’s Office in Guinea-Bissau supports the work of the UN Resident Coordinator and coordinates activities of the UN Country Team in its engagement with the Government as defined by the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). UNDAF describes how the UN country team will contribute to the achievement of development results based on a common country analysis and the UN comparative advantage.

The Resident Coordinator is leading and strategically positioning of the UNCT in Guinea-Bissau to respond to the current national priorities.

The Office core functions are:

  1. RC System Leadership, Leads the UN system image improvement and repositioning of the UN system development pillar to support Guinea-Bissau
  2. Operationalizing the SG’s Prevention Vision
  3. Strategic planning.
  4. Socioeconomic Response to Covid-19
  5. Strategic Financing and Partnerships
  6. Coordination of SDG Implementation
  7. Leaving No One Behind, Human Rights and Gender Equality in the 2030 Agenda
  8. Data, results management and reporting
  9. Communications and advocacy

The Resident Coordinator youth internship program is designed to provide 14 weeks long opportunities for eligible applicants to learn more about the United Nations and Agenda 2030, support the work of the United Nations in Guinea-Bissau, and gain valuable professional experience. Applicants will report to the Head of the Coordinator Office. Women and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct substantive research and analysis, including gathering and review of information and reports; monitoring and tracking of thematic developments; preparation of briefing notes and concept notes.
  • Support and contribute to data management and monitoring, including notetaking of key meetings; data collection, input and analysis; archiving; drafting, editing and fact-checking reports; development of infographics; drafting and publication of resource materials.
  • Support and contribute to engagement with key partners including mapping of partner activities; participation in external events; researching new proposals; and researching financing developments.
  • Support RCO in the finalization of Transition milestone documents, in the context of the development of the 2022-2026 UNSDCF.
  • Support the effective and efficient implementation of strategic communication and advocacy initiatives including in the creative including in the creative design of initiatives and visual materials.
  • Provide assistance to organize internal and external events, support team administration and coordination.
  • Assist in other related duties as required.

Competencies

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and writing) in French and English and Portugues is an asset
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • Demonstrates keen interest in the work of the UN.
  • Demonstrating/safeguarding professionalism, ethics and integrity.
  • Teamwork.
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants to the internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a university graduate degree programme (master’s level or equivalent); oror
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  • Must be able to work and live in Guinea-Bissau.

Work Experience and Desired Skillset:

  • Experience in advocacy and social media outreach desirable.
  • Experience with writing, research and analysis desirable.
  • Experience with data management desirable.
  • Experience with sustainable development issues desirable.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with colleagues of diverse cultural background.
  • Must be able to work independently, be well-organized; able to multitask, balance multiple responsibilities, and work to deadline.

Conditions:

  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship but a stipend will be provided;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
