We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow to provide required medical support within the remit of our project and to act as clinical trial manager to supervise the implementation of a cluster randomized trial to investigate a novel community mass drug administration (MDA) strategy for malaria control on the Bijagos Archipelago of Guinea Bissau between 2019 and 2022.

The project is funded by the Joint Global Health Trials Scheme and is a collaboration between LSHTM (UK), MRC The Gambia at LSHTM and our partners in the Ministry of Public Health and The Bandim Health Project in Guinea Bissau. The post-holder will be based predominantly at the field in Guinea Bissau with time spent at each of the collaborator sites.

While in Guinea Bissau, the post-holder will be expected to lead and work with a multi-disciplinary team including a deputy clinical trial manager, and field and laboratory teams. The post-holder will be supported by researchers at LSHTM in the Departments of Clinical Research (CRD) and Infection Biology (DIB) who are experienced in the fields of infectious diseases, malariology and the effects of MDA for the control of infectious diseases in endemic countries. The post-holder will be required to diagnose and treat medical problems in trial participants.

The successful candidate will have a Postgraduate degree (such as MSc) in an appropriate clinical or epidemiological related discipline, a Medical qualification and will have completed core medical training. The post-holder will also be a registered medical practitioner and holder of a Licence to practise medicine in their own country; will have relevant experience of working in rural communities and supervising field teams in a low income country – specifically remote African settings; proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a research team to meet deadlines. Experience of working closely with laboratory colleagues and/or experience and understanding of issues surrounding community based mass drug administration in sub-Saharan Africa as well as knowledge of clinical trials and their regulatory framework would be highly desirable.

We anticipate that the post-holder will undertake a part-time PhD nested within the trial through LSHTM thus providing an excellent career development opportunity. To note that this is subject to the successful completion of the probation period.

This full time, fixed-term post is funded by the Joint Global Health Trials Scheme (MRC/Wellcome/UKAid/NIHR) and is available for 3 years from 1 September 2019 until 31 August 2022. Appointments will be made to an appropriate point 1-5 on the national clinical academic salary scales below the level of consultant within the range £34,731 to £41,516 per annum. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
